Nearly 35 years ago 4 lads from Dublin began playing together as teenagers. Just a few years later they were signed to a record deal with Island Records and the rest, as they say, has been rock history.
Although their sound was influenced by the punk fare of the day, U2 had and continues to have a sound all its own. The Jam, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols (man I loved Sid Vicious) all were great bands and all left their mark on the formative years of U2, but the haunting guitar of the edge, the pounding drums of Larry Mullen, the deep resounding bass lines of Adam Clayton and the voice…THE voice of a man named Paul Hewson are like no other we have ever heard.
You may now know Paul Hewson as the rest of the world does… simply as Bono.
Bono had me hooked as a young college student. I had heard all of the bands that were supposedly “hot” and being a bit rebellious I was looking for something with a bit more edge and a bit more depth. In 1980 upon hearing “I Will Follow”, I knew what I had been looking for.
That one song has been played in over 757 U2 concerts so I am pretty sure that I am not alone in saying and feeling that the first hit from U2 resonates with millions of people around the world.
When Bono was 14 his mother died. He has said that this song is about the unconditional love a mother has for her child. He could not have done it any better than this.
U2 is hitting the road in 2010 and if you have not had a chance to see the best band in the world, you may want to get you U2 concert tickets as soon as you can. Bands like this only come around once in a lifetime.
